Adopted

Trooper

Born with a severely disfigured leg, Trooper was considered unwanted by the breeder who saw a dog with little value. Southern Cross saw something different.

After surgery, rehabilitation, and months in a foster home that refused to give up on him, he is a happy, thriving member of the family that chose him.

"Because every German Shepherd deserves someone who sees possibility instead of obstacles."

As a foster-based rescue, the number of dogs we can rescue is directly tied to the number of foster homes we have. Right now we're intentionally rebuilding our foster network, so that every dog we take in receives the same individualized care and the same time to heal.

Every new foster home means another dog gets that chance. Fostering is the fastest way to help us open our doors to more German Shepherds.

Our Adoption Philosophy

We believe the best adoptions aren't the fastest — they're the ones that last.

German Shepherds are extraordinary companions — intelligent, deeply loyal, and eager to form lasting bonds with the people they trust. They thrive in homes that provide structure, consistency, engagement, training, and patient guidance.

That's why we're committed to honest communication and thoughtful matching. When we make the right match, everyone benefits: the dog, the adopter, and the lifelong bond they build together.

Adoption Process

Seven Steps to Forever

Select any step to see what to expect.

Start by telling us about your home, your household, and the kind of companion you're hoping to welcome. The application helps us understand your lifestyle so we can begin thinking about which dogs might be the right fit.

Our team reviews every application personally. This isn't about finding reasons to say no — it's about understanding your situation well enough to make a match that lasts a lifetime.

We confirm that any current pets are well cared for and speak with your references. These conversations help us picture the daily life a dog would be joining.

You'll meet the dog (or dogs) we believe could be a strong match, along with the foster who knows them best. This is where connection begins and questions get answered honestly.

A brief home visit helps us confirm the space is safe and ready — and gives us a chance to offer setup tips that make those first days smoother for both of you.

Once everyone agrees it's the right match, we finalize the adoption and welcome you officially into the Southern Cross family.

Our relationship doesn't end at adoption. We remain a resource for guidance, training questions, and support for the entire life of your dog.

"We believe the best adoptions aren't the fastest — they're the ones that last."
